Juan Francisco Escudero Espinosa is Associate Professor in Public International Law and International Relations at the Faculty of Law, University of Leon (Spain), where he teaches courses on public international law, European Community law, the international protection of human rights, the International Criminal Court and international criminal responsibility.

From 2016, he is a member of two research projects on solutions to complex international criminal problems financed by the Spanish Ministry for Economics and Co-operation.

During his time at the Geneva Academy, Dr Escudero Espinosa will carry out research on the responsibility of armed non-state actors for the protection of the environment during armed conflicts, addressing questions related to the difficulty of applying the regime of states’ international responsibility in this context. This research will be carried out in the context of the research project From Words to Deeds: A Study of Armed Non-State Actors’ Practice and Interpretation of International Humanitarian and Human Rights Norms.

Dr Escudero Espinosa was previously an Assistant Professor, Lecturer, and Instructor at the University of Leon and a Tutor for several seasons of the Université d’été des droits de l’homme in Geneva (Switzerland). He has made visits for research and teaching purposes to the Centre d’Études et de Recherches Internationales et Communautaires of the Université Paul Cézanne in Aix-en-Provence (France), the Centre de Recherche en Droit Public of the Université de Montréal (Canada), and the Jean Monnet Chair in the Law of the International Economic Integration of the Faculty of Law of the McGill University of Montreal (Canada).

Dr Escudero Espinosa won a second prize and a prize for educational innovation awarded by the Social Council of the University of Leon in the 2007 and 2010 competitions for his work as coordinator of two educational teams.

He was a member of a research project on the international production and trading of genetically modified organisms and he has worked on several publications in this field. He was also the director of a research project on the national and regional application of European Community norms regulating the security of the biotechnology.

Dr Escudero Espinosa holds a LDD (Doctor of Laws), a LLM and a LLB from the University of Leon.
