Our objective is to produce graduates who will be leaders in the humanitarian, human rights and transitional justice fields.

A strong theoretical and practical knowledge of the applicable international legal framework is essential for working on issues related to armed conflict and other situations of violence, peace negotiations, human rights protection, or transitions from violent conflict or oppressive rule. Operating in such complex environments requires a solid understanding of the content and structure of the law, as well as its limits.
We produce, via our three master's programmes, specialists in international humanitarian law (IHL), international human rights law, international law in armed conflict, international criminal law and transitional justice. In doing so we are responding to the growing need for expert professionals in these sectors.
Most of our students go on, or return, to work in these fields with international organizations, international courts and tribunals, NGOs, governments or academic institutions. Our graduates have a visible presence in Geneva-based HR and humanitarian institutions, but also in the wider field and other cities worldwide.
By offering students internships with leading IHL and human rights actors, the LLM in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights complements strong academic teaching with exposure to practical work. Throughout the year, students also have access to a rich network of experts and practitioners, which can be an advantage when looking for a job.
The Master of Advanced Studies in Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law (MTJ) combines high-level academic education with real-world practice. Different parts of the programme allow students to develop the transferable skills necessary to succeed in the professional world and take up responsibilities in the field of transitional justice, human rights and the rule of law.
A solid theoretical and practical knowledge of the law that applies to armed conflicts and other situations of violence is an essential tool for those working – or aspiring to work – in this field. Mastering the appropriate legal framework that applies to humanitarian interventions, peacekeeping or counter-terrorism operations, the refugee crisis, peace negotiations or human rights investigations is recognized as a key and rare asset by international organizations, NGOs and governments. Enabling this, the Executive Master in International Law in Armed Conflict allows professionals to advance their career in these fields via a renowned diploma.
Our students can benefit from the Career Services provided by the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
Our LLM and MTJ students can extend their resident permit for up to six months following the completion of their programme (July to December) to undertake an internship or temporary assignment related to their studies in a Geneva-based organization, and/or to look for a job in Geneva or Switzerland.
During the year, our students benefit from the Career Services of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
